How do you design typography that gets scared 😱 when you turn off the light, that collapses 🧗♀️ when the phone shakes, that melts 🧊 when global warming increases? Together, we're going to think about new axes of typographic variation other than weight or width to give new looks to texts.
To get a good start, I will introduce you to the subject by showing you a series of references, to help you understand the graphic and technical possibilities.
We will then move on to forming groups.
In groups, you will then spend the rest of the morning, and the early afternoon if necessary, collecting graphic references, around ten projects, from many sources, to create a moodboard that will serve as a guideline for your work.
These references should serve the idea behind the variable axis. Try to surprise me and your colleagues.
The rest of the day will then be devoted to sketching the two states of the letters that will form the skeleton of our typography ADHESION
You can choose upper or lower case style, or both mixed, it's called unicase typography style.
For the sketching phase, you choose the tools you want: pencils, markers, a geometric grid, vector graphics software, shapes cut out of paper...
Depending on your research, I'll guide you towards the best way of digitally creating the variable axis.
At 10am you will present your projects to the rest of the participants. We will discuss it together to see if it raises any ideas with the other groups.
Following these discussions you will stabilise your shapes to find an effective and easy way to have modification system for the following characters ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ 1234567890 ,.;:!?""-()
You separate within the group. One will continue to work on the typography and the other will start work on the specimen website.
You'll need to choose the colours, choose the illustrations or photos to go with the typography, and choose the text typography that will explain your approach.
I'll also give you some code bricks that will make your job easier and provide an overall structure between the different sites.
Do all the letters, numbers and punctuation in the two variation states.
Code the website and make sure it works on computers and smartphones.
Finish typography.
Finish website.
We'll assemble the typography and the website, fixing out the many bugs that will pop.
Presentation of your project to the rest of the students in the other workshops
Around 5pm, we're saying goodbye but I'm still available by email at any time 😉
